Thomas Lewis Johnson was an African American who lived in the state of Virginia during the 1800s in the height of the controversy of slavery. He experienced racism to great extremities through its horrible practice. He was beaten, whipped, bruised, abused, spat upon, mistreated, impoverished, and treated as a piece of property for 28 years. One day his master pulled him aside to inform his they were going to a book burning. “A book burning?” Yeah, some preacher is preaching against slavery, and we are going to burn his books. Thomas thought to himself, “A preacher preaching against slavery…I want to meet that man.” He asked, “What is that preacher’s name?” His master said, “Charles Spurgeon of London, England.” Once Thomas Johnson was freed, God called him to ministry serving as a pastor in congregations in Denver and Chicago. God began dealing with him about being a missionary to Africa. An individual he knows had connections with Spurgeon, and wrote Spurgeon about Johnson, who was a slave for 28 years, attending the Pastor’s College to which Spurgeon paid for his family to move to London, train in London and be commissioned to proclaim the gospel to people of Africa. What are you doing to reach the lost?
