The book of Exodus is a book about how God led the Israelites out of the bondage of the Egyptians. It’s a unique story of how God can turn evil around for good (Gen. 50:20). After Joseph’s death, another Pharoah came to power who didn’t like the Hebrews and ultimately treated them like slaves. For over 400 years, the Israelites were used to engaged cruel forced labors. Eventually God raised up Moses (and Aaron) to march into the palace to proclaim God has said to let His people go or face the plagues. After a series of plagues (blood, frogs, lice, flies, livestock, boils, hail, locust, darkness, death of firstborn), Pharoah released them, but then attempted to chase them down. Moses, and the some 2.5M Israelites were trapped by the Red Sea with nowhere to go. That’s when God sent a strong east wind to part the Red Sea and the Egyptians drowned in the water. Once the Israelites observed this, they sang what we now call “The Song of Moses.” With that in mind, our passage today has been called the Last Exodus. One day God’s providential plan will be accomplished in the sight of every man!
