The year was 1992. The city was Barcelona. The event was the 400m semifinals. The
occasion was the Olympics. The man was Derek Redmond. An Olympian gold medalist from Great Britain and perhaps one of the favored runners to win. The runners assembled to their starting points. They positioned themselves. The gun fired and they were off! Redmond was off to a magnificent start. The first leg gave all indication he was going to win the race. Then out of nowhere, Redmond begins to hobble holding his right leg then collapsed to the ground. He pulled his hamstring and instantly knew his chances of another medal were over. However, he didn’t give up. Insisting no one help him, he gets back up, hops on one leg with determination to finish the 400m. A man in the stands pressed through the crowd and security to help. It was Redmond’s father who wrapped his arms around his son, and they finished the race together. Although he was disqualified due to the assisted help, 65,000 stood clapping and cheering Redmond on. This race goes down as one of the most memorable races in Olympic history! Just as he overcame the obstacles to finish the race, through Christ’s work on the cross we can overcome sin, death, hell and the grave!
