Muggsy Bogues was a household name in the 1980s and 1990s. Without question, he is one of the greatest NBA athletes to play the game with little to no recognition today. He has been overlooked, underappreciated, and dismissed all because he stood at 5’3”. One coach said, “How can I play somebody this small in the NBA?” Bogues is called the underdog of the NBA for that reason. However, with the heart of a lion, lightning speed, strength beyond his stature, insane handles, competitive drive, court vision, basketball IQ, and general of his team, he became the smallest, fiercest basketball player in NBA history. Do you really want to know why I believe Muggsy is one of the greatest basketball players of all time? It’s because he was in the movie Space Jam with Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, and Larry Johnson. There’s no doubt when Bogues stood next to his opponents, they dismissed his abilities because he was at least one foot shorter than most of the NBA players. He overcame all the odds stacked up against him and used his height as an advantage. What’s interesting is he was the average height of the NBA fan, and quickly became a fan favorite. Young boys, teenagers, and shorter guys alike dreamed more of playing in the league because of him! Jude’s epistle is a lot like Bogues because it has been overlooked, avoided, and dismissed by most people simply because of its size.
